Mapping and Decision-making Tool in the Emergency Context

The attached training exercise shows how GIS can be an effective tool in the management of emergencies, both in disaster response and as a prevention approach for long-term strategies.  Moving a step beyond providing the cartographic location of aggregated information,  collected data should be subjected to thematic analysis and employed in a spatial dimension that allows problems to be addressed quickly with the most appropriate interventions.

In the parallel application of a diagnostic where infrastructure networks (such as roads, electricity and safe water) are being ruined, priority interventions could be established on the maps to determine.  The training exercise is made up of two parts, one part theory (Download the presentation) and one part hands-on, where the students can apply certain concepts.
