Data compilation and mapping for ShelterCluster (Indonesia)

Compilation, analysis and mapping of data In Indonesia provided by the ShelterCluster as a volunteer project.

The project included the mapping of the vulnerability of Padang’s buildings and of the damaging of buildings in villages. It was possible thanks to the analysis and tests between damage and slopping ground, maps and data preparation to use it in GIS and Google Earth. Thanks to information meetings were successfully complete and some activities were coordinated.

CartONG has begun offering mapping support to the Shelter Cluster earthquake response in Padang, Indonesia in late September 2009. The cluster already has an American Red Cross specialist on-site managing and coordinating information from the field and some parts are / will be synthesized through the maps.

One output of the Shelter Cluster information management is the summarization of the shelter distribution allowing one to identify the humanitarian need per district

In October 2009, through datasets provided by the University of La Rochelle and formatted by CartONG, a map of the buildings and their level of vulnerability was created for Padang in 2008. A mapping database composed of the vulnerability of each building and each city block and roads is now being used in the response.

This island mapping could include reused for Emergency Architects to estimate the damage of individuals buildings. For ease of field use, the files have been converted to Google Earth.

This kind of support and outputs are a great tool for better coordination, however this could be greatly enhanced should a GIS technician be deployed.
