{"id":587,"date":"2023-04-26T18:09:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T18:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cartong.lacooperativedesinternets.fr\/?p=587"},"modified":"2024-03-26T11:24:21","modified_gmt":"2024-03-26T10:24:21","slug":"a-look-back-at-cartongs-participation-in-the-geonight-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cartong.org\/en\/2023\/04\/26\/a-look-back-at-cartongs-participation-in-the-geonight-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"A look back at CartONG&#8217;s participation in the GeoNight 2023!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the GeoNight?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The GeoNight was created in France in 2017 by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnfg.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">French National Committee of Geography<\/a>\u00a0(CNFG). It has since expanded to Europe and then to the international level. Its goal? To showcase geography and geographers once a year and give the general public the opportunity to learn about geographic concepts and studies. Find out more\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geonight.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mapathons for the SDGs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><strong>&#8220;<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>The event was a great success in Togo and allowed us to complete the mapping of 3 projects. We had 37 participants, 23 in person and 14 online, most of them new contributors. The participants were very happy to take part in the event and most of them want\u00a0to join us and be part of our community.<\/em><\/strong><em><strong>&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>Feedback from OSM Togo who co-organized a mapathon in Lom\u00e9<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coopi-media-text\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cartong.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/02\/News_thumbnail_NDG_2023_FR.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1857 size-undefined\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Mapping areas that do not appear on maps: this is the basic objective of a mapathon. From\u00a0remote\u00a0or in person, experienced cartographers and amateurs with a passion for geography came together to produce geographic data on the OpenStreetMap (OSM) platform, the Wikipedia of maps. This data will\u00a0<strong>facilitate the activities<\/strong>\u00a0of various actors\u00a0<strong>working in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Togo, Benin and Madagascar<\/strong>. In collaboration with local OSM communities, we decided to map territories in these three countries, where projects for the promotion of peace and security (SDG\u00a0#16) and sustainable local community planning and development (SDG\u00a0#11) are underway!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, some of the participants were able to allow Djeregou and Konohou\u00e9, two villages located in Togo, to appear on the OpenStreetMap when there was almost no data before. Others have mobilized in the Betsiboka region of northern Madagascar to map buildings located near the Maevatan\u00e0na water bodies and thus allow actors on the ground to better plan for risks related to development in this flood-prone area. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coopi-media-text has-media-on-the-right\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>In total, 8 field projects have been supported, that is 8 towns and villages that now appear on the map!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Through\u00a0<strong>15 mapathons<\/strong>\u00a0(8 in France, 6 in French-speaking Africa and 1 online), more than\u00a0<strong>44,000 buildings were mapped<\/strong>\u00a0thanks to the mobilization of\u00a0<strong>more than 230 participants<\/strong>, representing more than\u00a0<strong>420 hours of collective mapping<\/strong>. This first step will be completed by a validation of the data in the field by the local OSM communities.\u00a0Discover the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/de7a8fa2eeeb43c6bf91748ce2284918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">story map<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0created for the occasion and find the details of each of these mapathons!<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"301\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cartong.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/02\/2023-NDG_Madagascar-resolution-72.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1859 size-undefined\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thank you all!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thank you to the participants for coming together and taking part in this event.<\/strong>\u00a0Whether you are a geography enthusiast, an experienced cartographer or a novice, your participation was precious and we loved meeting you and sharing this moment together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;A very big thank you from the Sorbonne and Lycee Dorian for organizing the GeoNight mapathon.
