The site is a ‘one-stop-shop’ where humanitarian and development organisations' field and headquarters teams can quickly and easily access high quality, practical and strategic Information Management resources in English and French.
This includes the technical and technological subtopics of Information Management (GIS, Mobile Data Collection and data processing), but also larger topics such as responsible data, Open Data and data literacy, and cross-cutting topics such as Information Management needs evaluations and the imbrication of Information Management and Monitoring & Evaluation.
The portal is built around a Resource Library which makes accessible a wide range of content in various formats: tutorials, toolkits, case studies, lessons learned, benchmarking studies, strategic reports and more.
Users can also consult blog posts in the dedicated ‘Blog section’, as well as learn about upcoming Information Management related training courses, conferences and workshops for aid actors in the ‘Event section’.
All aid actors are greatly encouraged to submit resources, events or ideas for blog posts that they deem relevant to the conversation. Learn more here.

~ Mapping basic services in the Lake Chad basin for and by youth in support of PLAN International ~
|
|
Since 2020, CartONG has been supporting PLAN International Germany in the development of a set of interactive tools to map basic services and causal peace factors in the Lake Chad Basin (Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon) in real time over a 3-year period. A unique mapping project built around the empowerment of young people. From data collection in the field to the integration of the data into an online map-based platform, each step had to be managed by local youth. The public platform was launched in May 2021 and will be updated twice a year. Learn more about this project and discover the map here.

~ Update about the GIM Initiative launched in March 2021 ~
|
|
In our previous newsletter, we were pleased to announce the launch of the GIM Initiative, an initiative aiming to tackle the geospatial data challenges in support of the COVID-19 vaccine delivery and which is being implemented by 5 organizations - namely iMMAP, Alcis, CartONG Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, and MapAction. Since then, CartONG has applied to the Vaccine Data Co-Lab Open-Call for technical proposals for South Sudan, in consortium with MapAction. This includes the setup of an integrated geographic data package including a field deployment of one month, which will certainly end up being done by a volunteer from the MapAction team. This integrated geographic data package aims to overcome data gaps challenges by creating a shared, consistent resource accessible to all agencies involved in vaccine delivery in South Sudan. This new project follows the South Sudan pilot project launched by MapAction in April 2021 through which CartONG had started building up and feeding this geographic data package.

DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW TOOLBOX - Since January, CartONG has organized 12 group workshops halfway between subjective mapping and artistic mediation with 65 migrants in Lyon and Paris, in partnership with the CADA in Paris (hosting center for asylum seekers), the CADA located in Haÿ-les-Roses, and Lyon Red Cross. These workshops, organized as part of the Maps from here and abroad project supported by Fondation de France, aim to provide a space of creative expression adapted to intercultural contexts, and to inform the participants about existing access to psychological support. A toolbox is currently in preparation to support all organizations willing to implement similar workshops.
UPDATING THE WEBMAP PRODUCED IN SUPPORT OF ECPM - In 2020, we supported ECPM (Ensemble contre la peine de mort) and designed an interactive GeoApp, displaying information on the status of each country worldwide when it comes to the death penalty, and also showcasing where ECPM is active. This year, the team would like to have new features integrated, like storing and visualizing information on intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).
PARTICIPATORY MAPPING IN TAJIKISTAN - In collaboration with our local partner Little Earth, monthly mapathons have been organized in Dushanbe to map the 11 villages covered by the project. The team is now preparing the field activities for thematic and subjective mapping which will start this summer in the rural areas. In order to help coordinate those activities, our new intern Kelly will go to the field from July to October. She will mainly help Little Earth in launching the Mobile Data Collection campaign as well as facilitate subjective mapping workshops. This project is supported by GIZ and financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
UPCOMING RESOURCES FOR AID ACTORS - New resources will be released in the coming months as part of the project for the strengthening of francophone CSOs’ data practices. In particular, CartONG is planning an Information Management self-assessment tool for Civil Society Organizations and several practical toolboxes and training material. All will be published on the new IM Resource Portal - stay tuned through the portal’s newsletter!
NEW SUPPORT - This summer, CartONG will start a new project supporting Secours Islamique France (SIF) on a food security project in Southwest Madagascar, which is funded by AFD. In collaboration with malagasy OpenStreetMap community, we will train SIF’s field staff and students on data collection and mapping with OSM, and try to kick start a new local OSM group in the project’s area.
