Why should you join the CartONG volunteer community?
Since its creation, CartONG has benefited from the support of its volunteer community, which makes many projects possible.
By volunteering, everyone also has the opportunity to develop new competences, attend training sessions, and participate fully in CartONG’s main associative life events. Here is what you can expect when joining the CartONG volunteer community:
- Around 70 members based in France and throughout the world - discover our map
- An opportunity to contribute to volunteer projects - mainly from remote - to support international and local solidarity organizations
- A close collaboration between staff and volunteers
- Many online friendly meetups, and a few onsite gatherings
- Resources made available (webinars, documentation) and training sessions offered to strengthen your skillset
- A commitment to promote the values of the association: human-centric, professionalism, agility, autonomy, collaboration, and connectedness
CartONG welcomes volunteers of all ages and from all backgrounds. No need to be an expert in Geographic Information Systems! Here are the 4 main ways you can join the big CartONG family.

1/ Start by getting to know our association

2/ Get involved from time to time: ever heard of the Missing Maps project?
Missing Maps is an international project which aims to put the world’s vulnerable communities on the map.
3/ Support small and medium-sized NGOs
- Subscribe to the “Lettre d’actu bénévole” to receive monthly updates on volunteering opportunities.
- Offer your help for an e-volunteering project by committing to a few hours each week for a few weeks or months. CartONG is looking for different skill sets: mapping and data management, web development, translation, communication, etc.
Discover some examples of projects implemented by our volunteers: a web map to better inform and orient migrant populations in Calais, the update of a database on the changes linked to border restrictions at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, or a remote sensing project to support an environmental impact assessment in Myanmar.
E-volunteering missions are carried out within the framework of the Volontariat d’Échange et de Compétences, supported by the Fonjep. Learn more here.

4/ Beyond volunteering projects: taking part in CartONG’s associative life
- Become a member to take part in internal decisions. Being a member also enables you to present your candidacy to join the Board.
- Participate in an associative weekend, called a Get-Together, to meet your staff team and other volunteers. We always share the information about upcoming Get-Togethers via the monthly “Lettre d’actu bénévole”.
- Take part in the GeOnG forum on humanitarian data, organized by CartONG every two years.

FAQ
If you have any questions about volunteering at CartONG or volunteering opportunities, you can contact our team via
email.
It is not required to be a member to volunteer (and vice-versa). However, we encourage all volunteers to become members too. Being a member enables you to participate in internal decision-making - through the General Assembly - and access our internal tools.
It is not required to speak French to volunteer in CartONG. However, most of our communication with volunteers (newsletters, volunteer happy hour gatherings, mapathons, etc.) occurs in French. It will be easier for you to join our volunteer community if you understand at least a little bit of French.
We offer a variety of activities, which enables our volunteers to find a level of commitment that matches their availability. If you have little free time, you can, for example, occasionally join a two-hour mapathon from remote!
